PUKALANI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2017

Our quarterly General Membership Meetings were held on January 17, April 18, Special Verizon Wireless meeting May 24, August 15 and November 14. Programs included:
  • Maui Friends of the Library update by Rick Woodford
  • Verizon Wireless antenna location planning
  • Recycling on Maui update by Stacia Ash, Maui Recycling Specialist
  • Affordable Housing update by Carol Reimann, Director Department of Housing and Human Concerns and Alice Lee, Consultant
  • Information on the proposed Haiku Food Hub by Jenny Pell of the Maui Farmer’s Union
  • Update on Rat Lung Disease, Little Fire ants and our bee population by Cynthis Nazario-Leary, PhD of the Manoa Cooperative Extension Service

2017 Achievements:
  • Successful first annual PCA Golf Tournament in June raising $2,300 for free keiki golf lessons at Pukalani Country Club under the leadership of our Event Chair Loretta Slyh
  • Presentations and submittal of the PCA budget priorities - Mayor’s Budget Request for 2018 and 2019.
  • Installation of two picnic tables and benches at Pukalani Park thanks to our Parks Chair Alda St. James.
  • Additional Skatepark funding approved by council. Skatepark construction to start in 2018. Mahalo to our Skatepark Chair Petar Kovack.

Going forward we are well positioned to strengthen membership and better serve our community. We will continue to work on our primary concerns:
  • Increase in PCA membership
  • Verizon Wireless tower location
  • Addressing concerns of our membership

This has been a team effort and as we know many hands make heavy burdens light. Please join us in 2018.

Pukalani Community Association Annual Report 2016

Our quarterly General Membership Meetings were held on January 19, April 19, August 16 and November 15.  Programs included:
  • Ernie Rezents’ PowerPoint presentation on trees in Pukalani and how to take care of them
  • Pukalani Elementary School updates
  • Presentation on revised location for the Verizon Wireless project at Pukalani Country Club
  • Presentation on the Calley O’Neill Hawaiian design mosaic mural at Pukalani School
  • Discussion on crime in the area with police department
  • Transportation Director Don Medeiros discussion on upcountry bus routes
  • Emily Seversen discussion on the UH Seabird Recovery Project
  • Councilwoman Gladys Baisa update on council issues before her term is completed and celebration of her service to Maui County
  • Presentation by Maui Grown Therapies, one of the two approved medical marijuana providers on Maui
 
2016 Achievements:
  • Successful rummage sale in June raising $1,411 for 2 park picnic tables and the upcoming skatepark kids. Many thanks to all who donated and the hard working set-up, sales and take-down crew.
  • Sidewalk Improvements completed – From Five Trees to Loha St. with plans to continue down to Pukalani St.
  • Presentations and submittal of the PCA budget priorities - Mayor’s Budget Request for 2017 and 2018.
  • Presentation and submittal of the PCA bus route preferences – our desire for a reversal route between Makawao and Pukalani was implemented in September.
  • Repair of Pukalani Park restrooms and improved cleaning of the pool area and locker rooms.
  • Purchase of two picnic table with County approval and agreement to install them in our desired location thanks to our Parks Chair Alda St. James.
  • Skatepark renegotiations underway with estimated construction in 2017 thanks to Petar Kovacic and his skatepark group.
 
Going forward we are well positioned to strengthen membership and better serve our community.  We will continue to work on our primary concerns:
  • Increase in PCA membership
  • Facebook page setup for better PCA reach out to community
  • Sidewalk improvements from Loha St. to Pukalani St.
  • Verizon Wireless tower location
  • Feral chickens/roosters
  • Hannibal Tavares Community Center/Pukalani Park improvements
  • Invasive species control
  • Disaster/pandemic planning
  • Community event to celebrate Pukalani

PUKALANI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Our quarterly General Membership Meetings were held on January 20, April 21, August 18 and November 17. Programs included:
  • Maui Humane Society update on their programs and plans
  • The history behind Pukalani Superette
  • Hawaii Water Service explanation of their improvements to the Pukalani wastewater system and the Public Utilities Commission decision on the rate increase for users.
  • Pukalani Elementary School updates
  • Maui Electric Company future plans
  • Disaster Preparedness with emphasis on upcountry concerns
  • Discussion on the County Manager form of government for Maui County
  • Presentation on the Verizon Wireless project at Pukalani Country Club
  • Legislative update from our Representative Kyle Yamashita
Achievements:
  • Successful rummage sale raising $1300 for Pukalani Elementary School STEM Team
  • Make A Wish Foundation – Backyard improvements for Pukalani resident Ryder
  • Sidewalk Improvements completed – King Kekaulike to Five Trees and underway from Five Trees to Loha St. with plans to continue down to Pukalani St.
  • Presentations and submittal of the PCA budget priorities - Mayor’s Budget Request for 2016
  • Presentation and submittal of the PCA bus route preferences – SSFM Engineering study and recommendations now include a reversal route between Pukalani and Makawao towns
  • Repair of Pukalani Park restrooms and improved cleaning of the pool area and locker rooms

PUKALANI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2014

We have made good progress on the formation on the revitalized Pukalani Community Association. As we finish up work for 2014, we can report completion of the following items with the main person responsible for progress:

  1. New Articles of Incorporation (Laurie Gima and Donna Clayton)

  2. Set up of bank account and accounting procedures (Edith Don, Barbara Luke and Donna Clayton) – balance in bank account is $2,410.78.

  3. Membership dues determined and initial dues collected. (All)

  4. Design of Pukalani Community Association logo (Jim St. James), banner (Donna Clayton) and table drape (John Torrance)

  5. Design of flyers, business cards and posters (Tamara Lester and Jackie Brainard)

  6. Website design and set up and email contact (Tamara Lester and Jackie Brainard)

  7. Presentation of Budget Requests for two budget hearings (Officers)

  8. Park improvements (Alda St. James) including additional park benches, improved cleanliness in pool area, promise of new tennis courts. PCA is not advocating for "additional park benches." We are requesting at least 2 picnic tables in specific areas of the park (under two existing trees). The locations were designated in an email attachment to Briann Savage's office by PCA earlier this year.

  9. Bus route concerns expressed resulting in a new bus seating area and lights at the Pukalani St. crosswalk. (Laurie Gima, Eric Amaral, Kathleen Phillips, Donna Clayton) Next step is to improve the bus route including a reversal route.

  10. Membership in the Alliance of Community Associations on Maui (Donna Clayton)

  11. Pukalani representation at Mayoral and Council candidates forums (Donna Clayton)

Going forward we are well positioned to strengthen membership and better serve our community. We will continue to work on our primary concerns:
